EEG Machine Care: Daily, Weekly and Annual Maintenance
An EEG machine is a long-term investment. A simple maintenance routine keeps recordings clean, prevents breakdowns and extends the life of the equipment.
Daily
- Clean electrodes after each patient. Remove paste with warm water and a soft brush, disinfect as per protocol and dry fully.
- Inspect leads and connectors for cracks, kinks or loose pins.
- Wipe the headbox and cables with a slightly damp cloth (never spray liquid directly).
- Back up recordings to an external drive or server.
Weekly
- Run the amplifier self-test or calibration signal if available.
- Test all electrodes for impedance on a test board or a volunteer.
- Clean electrode caps thoroughly and let them air-dry.
- Check that the PC has enough free space for recordings.
Monthly
- Install software updates approved by the supplier.
- Check the photic stimulator and the video camera, if fitted.
- Review the earthing and the UPS battery status.
- Audit consumables (paste, gel, abrasive, tape, disposable electrodes).
Annually
- Preventive maintenance by a qualified engineer: electrical safety, amplifier performance and connector inspection.
- Replace worn electrodes and caps.
- Renew the AMC or CMC once warranty ends. See our AMC vs CMC guide.
Do’s and don’ts
- Do store electrodes loosely coiled, never tightly wound.
- Do keep the machine covered when not in use.
- Don’t pull electrodes by their wires.
- Don’t run the machine on unstable power without a UPS.
- Don’t install unrelated software on the acquisition PC.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do EEG electrodes last?

Can I clean electrodes with alcohol?
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions; warm water and a soft brush are usually enough, with approved disinfectants as required.
Is UPS necessary?
Strongly recommended — it protects equipment and reduces electrical noise.
