EEG Machine Buying Checklist for Hospitals and Neurology Clinics
Use this checklist when comparing EEG quotations. It covers what matters clinically and what keeps running costs low over the life of the machine.
Technical specifications
- Channel count. 24 for routine EEG, 32 for flexibility, 64 for high-density work. See our comparison.
- A/D resolution. 14-bit is adequate; 16-bit gives finer detail.
- Sampling rate. 500–1024 Hz is comfortable for clinical work.
- Noise level. Below about 1 µV is excellent.
- Input impedance and CMRR. High input impedance (above 10–20 MΩ) and CMRR above 100 dB reduce interference.
- Filters. User-definable low, high and notch (50 Hz) filters.
Software
- Montages. Easy creation and switching of bipolar, referential and average montages.
- Review tools. Event markers, annotations, measurement cursors and split screen.
- Analysis. Brain mapping, FFT and CSA/DSA if you need quantitative work.
- Export. EDF or other standard formats, and PDF reports.
Hardware and practicality
- Portability. USB-powered amplifiers are convenient for ICU and bedside use.
- Video readiness. Can you add synchronised video later?
- Accessories. Electrode caps in several sizes, disc electrodes, a photic stimulator and a trolley.
Compliance, service and cost
- Certification. CE marking and CDSCO compliance; supplier ISO 9001:2015 certified.
- Service. Onsite installation and training, local engineer availability, spare parts and the warranty period (usually 1 year), plus AMC/CMC rates after that.
Questions to ask the supplier
- Can you show installations near us, and can we speak to a user?
- What is the typical response time for a breakdown?
- Is laptop/PC included or extra?
- Can you support GeM or tender documentation?
Total cost of ownership
Add up the equipment price, GST, accessories, UPS, consumables for three years and AMC. A slightly costlier machine with reliable local service often costs less overall.

Frequently Asked Questions
What sampling rate is good for clinical EEG?
Most clinical EEG uses 200–500 Hz; systems offering 500–1024 Hz give headroom for spike analysis and research.
What noise level is acceptable?
Look for amplifier noise below about 1–2 µV.
Should I insist on EDF export?
Yes. Standard export lets you share data and avoid being locked into one vendor.
