Neurofeedback vs Biofeedback: What’s the Difference?
The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a useful distinction.
Biofeedback
Biofeedback trains control of peripheral physiological signals:
- Skin conductance (GSR).
- Muscle tension (EMG).
- Heart rate and HRV.
- Breathing.
- Skin temperature.
It is used for stress, anxiety, tension headache, relaxation and rehabilitation. See what is biofeedback.
Neurofeedback
Neurofeedback, or EEG biofeedback, trains brain-wave activity. Sensors record EEG, the software calculates features such as alpha or theta power, and the patient gets feedback when the target pattern appears.
Uses include relaxation (alpha training), attention research and performance work. The evidence varies by condition, so clinics should use protocols with good support.
Comparison
| Factor | Biofeedback | Neurofeedback |
|---|---|---|
| Signals | GSR, EMG, HR, respiration, temperature | EEG |
| Setup | Simple sensors | EEG electrodes |
| Learning curve | Shorter | Longer |
| Equipment | Modules or PC system | EEG-capable system |
Equipment
- Alpha EEG module (EBF-5000). Simple alpha training. See biofeedback modules.
- CBF-206 PC system. Combines EEG with GSR, EMG, pulse, respiration and ECG, plus neurofeedback modules. See computerised biofeedback.
- Clinical EEG systems for quantitative work. See qEEG and brain mapping.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is neurofeedback more effective than biofeedback?
They target different processes; choice depends on goals and evidence for the condition.
What equipment does neurofeedback need?
EEG sensors, amplifier and software that provides real-time feedback.
Can one system do both?
Yes — PC-based systems like the CBF-206 combine EEG with peripheral signals.
